Director-General meets with US Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs
On 22 September, on the margins of the 71th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Director-General met with Ms Bathsheba Nell Crocker, United States Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs.
During the meeting, the Director-General informed the Assistant Secretary of UNESCO's latest programmes and activities to address current global challenges, in particular on preventing violent extremism, promoting global citizenship education, notably in the face of increased migration, fighting racism, discrimination and anti-semitism and protecting cultural heritage.
She underscored the longstanding and ever deepening cooperation between UNESCO and the United States in these important fields and expressed appreciation for the United States engagement and support in this regard.
The Assistant Secretary commended the Director-General for her leadership and reiterated the United States full support to UNESCO's programmes and activities. Ms Crocker also reaffirmed the United States commitment to continue its efforts in order to find a solution that would allow the restoration of the US funding to the Organization.
The Director-General and the Assistant Secretary then exchanged on some of the priority issues which will be on the agenda of the next session of the UNESCO Executive Board as well as on the ongoing reform of the Organization, including the Structured Financing Dialogue which has been initiated within the Organization.
