Director-General of UNESCO welcomes UN Security Council on aid to Syria
The Resolution 2139 was unanimous adopted on 22nd February 2014 to increase humanitarian aid in Syria, calling on all parties to immediately end all violence which has led to human suffering in Syria, save Syria’s rich societal mosaic and cultural heritage, and take appropriate steps to ensure the protection of Syria’s World Heritage Sites.
“I commend this resolution and its appeal to protect Syria’s cultural heritage, one of the richest heritage in the world. Protection of cultural heritage must be an integral part of all peace efforts and is inseparable from the protection of civilians and human lives in armed conflict.” stated the Director General, on the occasion of a Conference at UNESCO on the new wars of the XXI century.
