Director-General’s official visit to the Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation)
From 19 to 21st August, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, pays an official visit to the Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation). During her visit, the Director-General will hold bilateral meetings with Mr Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan, and other officials.
The Director-General will also participate in the event taking place on the occasion of the celebration of the inscription of the “The Bolgar historical-architectural complex” on the World Heritage List.
This event will be an occasion to pay tribute to the special role of Bolgar in the protection and promotion of cultural diversity at regional level and in the process of harnessing culture and heritage to foster social cohesion and intercultural dialogue.
The historical and archaeological site of Bolgar, located on the left bank of the Volga River, represents the historical cultural exchanges and transformations of Eurasia over several centuries. It played a pivotal role in the formation of civilizations, customs and cultural traditions of the region. Bolgar was always located at the crossroads of trade, economic, cultural and political communications and illustrates the interaction of nomadic and urban cultures.
