Forthcoming UNESCO Future Forum to focus on water resources

With just a few weeks to go before the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), UNESCO will devote its next Future Forum to the issue of “Global Water Futures 2050”. The Forum will take place at the Organization’s Headquarters (Room XI, 3 to 5 p.m.).

According to the United Nations’ World Water Development Report, presented at last month’s World Water Forum in Marseille (France), one billion people have no access to safe drinking water. By 2025, almost 60% of the world’s population will be living in areas suffering from fresh water scarcity. Securing sustainable access to safe drinking water for all is one of the items on the agenda of the Rio+20 Conference.

The aim of the future-oriented Forum, is to review progress in the sustainable management of water resources worldwide and present different scenarios of what the future holds depending on the choices politicians and societies make in coming years.

The event will enable experts to share their views with representatives of Member States, and UNESCO’s Secretariat, decision-makers, intellectual and scientific communities, civil society, and the media so as to raise awareness of global water issues, and advocate a coordinated global approach to managing and allocating water in the lead up to Rio+20.

Speakers at the Forum will include William Cosgrove, Senior Adviser to the Fourth United Nations World Water Development Report and Manager of the World Water Scenarios Project; Olcay Unver, Coordinator of the United Nations World Water Assessment Programme; Abdin Salih, Acting Director of the Division of Water Sciences and Acting Secretary of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP); Andras Szollosi-Nagy, Rector of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education; and Patricia Wouters, Director of the UNESCO HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee.
