Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser of Qatar Contributes $20 million to UNESCO
14.12.2011 - UNESCO’s Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser of Qatar, is making an immediate contribution of $20 million to help UNESCO manage its financial shortfall. Her Highness met with UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, on 11 December in Qatar and committed the funding support during the meeting. It is the first step in a longer-term engagement with the Organization.
“This is a most welcome expression of support for UNESCO,” stated the Director-General. “Her Highness is concerned that the financial difficulties faced by the Organization will have serious consequences on UNESCO’s core programs.”
UNESCO faces an immediate shortfall of $72 million following the suspension of U.S. contributions in October. A further $167 million is required to meet budgetary commitments for 2012 and 2013.
