In the framework of the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee and the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, Her Royal Highness Princess Dana Firas participated in the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2018 ‘Protecting Heritage in an Ever-Changing World’, which took place from 17 to 26 June 2018 in Manama, Bahrain.

“Heritage evolves, adapts itself, and reinvents itself. It must be invested by the younger generations. This is also the meaning of the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum, held in Manama as it is the youth in their countries who will take over to protect the heritage, restore it and rebuild it, after natural disasters and conflicts”, declared UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, in her inaugural speech at the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee.

H.R.H. Princess Dana Firas attended the Forum as an international expert in heritage preservation and President of the Petra National Trust (PNT), inviting young professionals to reflect upon the complexity of preserving heritage in an ever-changing world. Through the PNT, H.R.H. Princess Dana Firas champions the protection of Petra, an ancient Nabataean City in Southern Jordan inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1985.

On 25 June, young professionals presented their work to the World Heritage Committee, recognizing the necessity to involve youth and local communities to ensure the long-term success of heritage conservation.

H.R.H. Princess Dana Firas was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in July 2017, in recognition of her outstanding commitment to heritage protection and preservation as a pillar of sustainable development and her contribution to responsible tourism.
