Humanitarian travel to Lebanon by Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

H.R.H. the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg traveled to Lebanon from 29 to 30 October 2018, in her capacity as President of the Foundation of the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and Eminent Advocate of UNICEF.

This travel’s goal was to meet with survivors of sexual violence in refugee or displaced situations, collecting their testimonies and supporting them. It took place in preparation for the "Stand Speak Rise Up- End Sexual Violence in Sensitive Areas” Forum, which the Grand Duchess will host on 26 and 27 March 2019 at the European Convention Center in Luxembourg.

After meeting the President of the Republic of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, the Grand Duchess visited the Arcenciel Association, a refugee camp and Cedras home ("safehouse") of the Caritas Foundation.

She first visited the Rafik Hariri hospital specialized in reconstructive surgery for people wounded by weapons, who cooperates with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and UNICEF. H.R.H. then visited a refugee camp near Bar Elias where she met with beneficiaries of the training in micro-financing .She finally visited the Caritas shelter in Reyfoun to learn more about their work in protecting and assisting victims of sexual violence.

The Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg has been working with UNESCO since 1997 as Goodwill Ambassador to promote education, women's rights and microfinance.
