International Forum for Reflection on the Culture of Peace in West Africa
UNESCO is organizing a series forums to meet the needs of African countries experiencing crisis or conflict, the first of these events will take place in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) on 4 and 5 June.
The international forum on a culture of peace in West Africa, taking place in Abidjan, is organized in partnership with the Center for Long Term Strategic Studies (CEPS) in cooperation with the government of Côte d’Ivoire. The meeting has been set to identify actions for the culture of peace in Africa.
Several roundtables during the Abidjan Forum will be dedicated to issues such as: cultural, religious and ethnic diversity and identity; the role of traditional actors in the endogenous mechanisms of conflict prevention and resolution; the role of the economic actors; the role of the African civil society and diaspora.
Participants at the forum will include Lalla Aïcha Ben Barka, Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Africa; Edith Cresson, former French Prime Minister; Loic Tribot de la Spière, Delegate-General CEPS; Charles Konan Banny, President of the Commission for Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation in Côte d’Ivoire; Hadja Saran Daraba, Secretary General of the “Manu River Union”; Christian Adovelande, President of the West Africa Development Bank (WADB); Doudou Dience, former UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.
This Forum is organized within the framework UNESCO’s programme for a culture of peace and non-violence. It is the first of several meetings whose aim is to meet the needs and expectations of African countries, particularly those in situations of crisis, conflict or post conflict. These preparatory initiatives should lead to a regional Forum for the Culture of Peace in Africa, organized in connection with the 2013 African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government Summit.
