Irina Bokova attends the 3rd Arab Economic and Social Development Summit
On 21 January, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, attended the 3rd Arab Economic and Social Development Summit (AESD), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 21 to 22 January 2013. The summit brought together a number of the Heads of State of the Arab region.
On this occasion, the Director-General met with Prince Faisal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Saud, Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and discussed ways to further strengthen the ongoing cooperation between the Kingdom and the Organisation.
The Director-General met also with Nabil El Araby, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States to discuss the cooperation between the two Organisations and the political situation after the Arab Spring in the region, notably the situation in Syria, including measures taken by UNESCO to safeguard Syria's rich cultural heritage. They also addressed the Organisation's current financial situation.
