“The great challenge of the twenty-first century is to ensure sustainable development for all individuals, whether male or female, young or not quite so young; it is to build green growth based on fairer, more equitable, more inclusive green societies,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova at the 14th annual L’OREAL-UNESCO For Women in Science Award ceremony. The ceremony took place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 29 March.

“Looking at tonight’s Prizewinners makes me think that solutions do exist and are within our reach if we know how to see them,” continued the Director-General, after congratulating the five winners of this year, Professor Jill Farrant of South Africa, Prizewinner for Africa and the Arab States, Professor Ingrid Scheffer of Australia, for the Asia and the Pacific region, Professor Bonnie Bassler of the United States of America, for North America, Professor Frances Ashcroft of the United Kingdom, for the Europe region and Professor Susana López of Mexico, for Latin America.

For the past 14 years, UNESCO and the L’Oréal Corporate Foundation have shined the spotlight on outstanding women researchers who, through the scope of their work, have contributed to overcoming the global challenges of today and tomorrow. Each year, the For Women in Science Programme highlights scientific excellence and encourages talent.
