Judith Pisar joins the family of UNESCO Special Envoys

The Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova designated the President of the Association Arts France-USA, Judith Pisar as a UNESCO Special Envoy for Cultural Diplomacy during an official ceremony, which took place at UNESCO Headquarters on June 15th 2017.

This title was bestowed upon Ms. Pisar in recognition of her efforts to promote culture and art as vehicles of peace, sustainable development and inclusion, her commitment towards dialogue among people and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization.

“On both sides of the Atlantic, you have nurtured the power of culture to bring people together, to build common ground. You have created safe spaces where countries can put aside their differences. You have harnessed creativity and art to heal wounds, to support reconciliation”, said the Director-General in the speech delivered on the occasion of this event. She also expressed her gratitude to Judith Pisar for her readiness to support, in her new capacity as UNESCO Special Envoy for Cultural Diplomacy, UNESCO’s actions notably in the framework of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

In her acceptance speech, Ms. Judith Pisar expressed her satisfaction with joining UNESCO’s prestigious family of Special Envoys and renewed her intention to support UNESCO’s work aiming to build bridges among people through cultural activities. She also announced her intention to bring her support to UNESCO’s work in the framework of the International Decade for the rapprochement of cultures (2013-2022).

Ms. Pisar’s son Antony Blinken, who served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State during President Obama’s second term, her daughter Leah Pisar and stepdaughter Alexandra Pisar-Pinto, gave testimonies on Ms. Pisar lifelong commitment to the issues of intercultural dialogue, mutual respect and understanding.

The designation ceremony was followed by a performance by Mr. Ivry Gitlis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
