UNESCO Director-General visits Rabat at the invitation of HM King Mohammed VI, on the occasion of Throne Day (Eid al-‘arsh)
Rabat, 30 July 2014 – As part of the Throne Day celebrations, HM King Mohammed VI, accompanied by HRH Crown Prince Moulay Hassan and HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, presided at the Royal Palace in Rabat over the formal ceremony to mark the fifteenth anniversary of his accession to the throne, in the presence of the former Head of the Spanish Government, Mr Felipe González.
On that occasion, HM King Mohammed VI awarded Ms Irina Bokova the title of Commander of the Order of Ouissam Alaouite.
During the visit, Ms Irina Bokova held informal talks with government representatives, including H.E. Mr Mohamed Aminé Sbihi, Minister of Culture. The Director-General congratulated the government representatives on the progress made under the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), launched by the King in 2005 to alleviate poverty while strengthening the country’s social cohesion, making culture and the cultural heritage of Morocco central to the Initiative.
The Director-General also met HRH Princess Lalla Salma, wife of HM King Mohammed VI, HRH Princess Lalla Meryem, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, HRH Princess Lalla Hasna, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the protection of the environment, and HRH Princess Lalla Asma at an official dinner in the presence of H.E. Ms Zouhour Alaoui, Ambassador of Morocco to UNESCO.
