Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, participated in the fourth edition of the Athens Democracy Forum, organized by the New York Times, from 14 to 18 September last in Athens, Greece. The theme of the forum was “Democracy in danger: Solutions for a Changing World.”

In the presence of the President of Greece H.E. Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the event gathered eminent personalities from various fields such as diplomats, CEOs, journalists, authors or politicians.

The discussions dealt with many issues: the role of companies and liberalism in a global world, the impact and challenges of migrations, the rise of far-right movements in the Western world and role of new technologies.

On that occasion, United Nations Secretary General Mr Antonio Guterres reminded in his message the key challenges of inequality, the need for more inclusive and innovative systems and the priorities of immigration. He added that “Democracy is showing greater strain than at any time in decades”.

In her speech, Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis stressed the importance of reevaluating classic models of democracy: “now more than ever, we have a great opportunity to use all the tools that the modern world has to offer in order to transform social solidarity into shared prosperity.  To offer not only financial benefits, but also to share the best practices and knowledge” she declared.

UNESCO is grateful to Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis for her involvement, in her capacity as Goodwill Ambassador, in protecting human rights, particularly the defense of the rights of migrants and their dignity.
