On 18 January 2020, Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, inaugurated alongside Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO, the first Reading Night at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

For its first participation in the Reading Night, which held the theme “Reading without Borders”, UNESCO welcomed almost 1000 people. Four meeting spaces were open to guests around the following themes: Reading for Inclusion, a Space for Youth, Reading for Tolerance, and World Readings.

During his opening speech, Ernesto Ottone thanked Mrs. Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, for her patronage without which the event would not have been able to take place. “I know how precious your commitment and sharing of UNESCO's values is to us. A source of pleasure and discovery, reading is and remains that special link that both develops our thinking and fosters individual and collective fulfillment. Reading is essential to the well-being and functioning of any society and, above all, it opens up the field of possibilities, encourages creativity and forges critical thinking” he said.

Through her support of this event promoting reading, Mrs Vardinoyannis is faithful to her role as an Ambassador concerned with defending UNESCO's message to transmit cultural heritage to new generations.

Reading as a means of inclusion is another objective of this Reading Night to which UNESCO welcomed individuals and associations to allow them to raise awareness amongst the public that reading is a valuable tool to enable migrants and refugees to learn the language of the host country.
