More than 500 Argentine school librarians convened around the transformation of their libraries into new spaces of digital culture

In the midst of an intense morning rain over the city of Buenos Aires, more than 500 school librarians met sharply on September 9 at the Usina del Arte to participate in the First Meeting of School Libraries in the City of Buenos Aires: “School libraries and digital culture”.

In the midst of an intense morning rain over the city of Buenos Aires, more than 500 school librarians met punctually on September 9 at the Usina del Arte to participate in the First Day of School Libraries in the City of Buenos Aires: “ School libraries and digital culture”.

Among the attendees, the presence of the Minister of Education of the Province of Buenos Aires, Soledad Acuña, who inaugurated the event, was highlighted, along with Mrs. Lidia Brito, director of the UNESCO Regional Office of Science for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Giuseppe Mancinelli, Deputy Regional Director of UNOPS, from the convening organizations.

Diversity, expectation, intense exchange between the participants were some of the characteristics of the event that had a unique international panel that shared an innovative conceptual vision and current global trends in educational policies with an impact on libraries. During the activity, the challenges faced by school libraries to become meeting places according to the society of the 21st century were addressed.

It was also the opportunity to identify regional and local experiences that shed light and inspiration on the way to new library models and / or led pedagogical activities that include the entire school and make use of digital technologies in their practices.

During the day, the role of school libraries as pedagogical agents was addressed; together with the subject of the school library in digital culture, the electronic book and the traditional book; and new spaces and dynamics inside the library.

The activity is part of the Project “Strengthening the Quality of Education in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) through the Use of Technology and Innovation” carried out by UNESCO Montevideo, UNOPS and the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires MECABA.

It represents a contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 4 of ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote learning opportunities for all.
