From 4 to 7 September 2018 was held this forum co-organized by Mr Mintimer Shaimiev, UNESCO Special Envoy for Intercultural Dialogue and State Counsellor of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the National Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO.

During the opening ceremony, the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov welcomed the 189 guests of the forum, including ministers and experts as well as the UNESCO Special Envoy Hedva Ser, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Alexandra Ochirova and UNESCO Artist for Peace Zarifa Mgoya

The talks focused on the Dialogue of Civilizations and aimed to elaborate new approaches of international cooperation to improve effectiveness of intercultural dialogue, within the framework of the United Nations International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

As UNESCO Deputy Director-General Mr Xu Qing stated in his address “We must rebuild our trust in the power of cooperation and dialogue. Too often we hear that dialogue is not effective, too complicated, too lengthy. We need to respond, with a stronger narrative about the importance of dialogue, cooperation and multilateralism, and work with communities to build the skills and create the spaces for exchanges which build mutual understanding and respect.”

Through the new initiative of the Kazan Forum, Mr Shaimiev continues his commitment as UNESCO Special Envoy to promote and disseminate values, attitudes and behaviors conducive to dialogue, non-violence and the rapprochement of cultures in the Republic of Tatarstan and beyond.
