OASIIS Biennial Report 2018 – The value of social entrepreneurship toward sustainable development in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves

The first OASIIS Biennial Report has been published 2 years after the online platform was launched in Lima, Peru at the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves. OASIIS (Opening Access to Sustainable Independent Income Streams) is a collective asset for the MAB Programme, and for social entrepreneurs living within them.

OASIIS aims to evidence and grow the impact of social entrepreneurs towards sustainable development by collecting novel data and connecting social entrepreneurs with opportunities across the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBRs).

As shown in the OASIIS Biennial Report 2018, OASIIS is recording US$ 11million turnover within Biosphere Reserves local economies and over 500 employment and training opportunities being created by social entrepreneurs within these areas. All this from just 2% of the WNBRs, the potential which lies within the global network is tremendous, OASIIS aims to better understand and effectively grow the action of social entrepreneurs towards the UN SDGs.

Through the MAB Programme, UNESCO promotes the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems… The MAB biosphere reserves are learning sites for sustainable development, where interdisciplinary approaches are tested to understand and manage interactions between social and ecological systems, and solutions are promoted to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. Today, there are 669 biosphere reserves in 120 countries including 20 transboundary sites. Around 250 million people live in UNESCO biosphere reserves.” Miguel Clüsener-Godt, Director a.i., Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences Secretary a.i., Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme

Colin Campbell, Assist Social Capital (ASC) and OASIIS founder, said: “It’s a delight to be publishing the first ever OASIIS Biennial Report. The report comes at a time when we inceasingly need to harness and accelerate the positive advances towards a more sustainable global society. We have presented here a real message of hope through data and the people behind those numbers. Issuing a call to invest in the social entrepreneurs within our WNBRs who are working tirelessly to reinvest in their communities and who are the real change makers in our society, we are recording, and probably underestimating, 395 direct actions towards the UN SDGs from organisations on OASIIS. We want to connect these SDG actors with supportive UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and with markets, partnerships, ideas, knowledge, social investment and inspiration across our collective WNBRs.”
