'Cameras of Diversity' prize to be awarded during Muestra Joven (Youth Showcase) 2013
The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, which is based in Havana, Cuba, is supporting the 'Cameras of Diversity' prize, which will be awarded within the framework of the 12th ICAIC Muestra Joven (Youth Showcase) of 2013. That event will be held in the Cuban capital from 2 to 7 April. The prize, which is directed towards the promotion of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, is awarded to the audiovisual production, which features local content, and which best reflects a social or community issue by means of some of the following themes: popular and traditional forms of expression; the problem of the risk of disappearance of cultural expressions and cultural diversity; threats associated with cultural homogeneity; and the African legacy linked to cultural traditions.
The Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC: Cuban Institute on Cinematographic Arts and Industry) holds Muestra Joven every year, in order to foster understanding and reflection in relation to the audiovisual work of young people, and to enable dialogue between different generations of artists making audiovisual productions in Cuba. During Muestra Joven 2013 filmmakers from 9 provinces of Cuba will come together to display the 72 works in the competition (which were selected from 156 works submitted). Of those 72, 33 are fiction films, 28 are documentaries and 11 are short works of animation. All these productions, made over the course of the last year, re-create the most diverse realities within the nation, as part of the new wave in Cuban audiovisuals. The 12th Muestra Joven also celebrates the 20th anniversary of Televisión Serrana, a community broadcaster nestled in the Sierra Maestra in the east of Cuba. Artists from that station will be guests at the event.
