Presentation of the Segundo Cabo Palace project to ambassadors of the European Union in Cuba
On the morning of 14 November, the Segundo Cabo Palace project was explained to the ambassadors and diplomatic corps of the Member States of the European Union accredited on the island.
Present at the event were the highest representatives of the institutions participating in the project: Mr Herman Portocarero, the European Union's Head of Delegation to Cuba; Mr Herman van Hooff, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean; and Dr Eusebio Leal, Historian of the City of Havana.
The Castillo de la Real Fuerza, adjacent to the site of the restoration works, was the site chosen to host the diplomats. Here the workers of the Office of the City Historian explained to them the origins of the Palace, its development and the plans for its future. The diplomats were informed that the project would continue until June 2014, at which time an interpretative centre would be inaugurated in the Palace, dedicated to intercultural relations between Cuba and Europe.
Following the explanation of the restoration works, the synergies that had developed, the challenges, and the future use of the building for cultural purposes, the visitors moved into the Palace itself, where they participated in a guided tour of the site in the midst of the restoration works, and were able to confirm its magnificent location in the centre of Old Havana and its Fortifications. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the recognition and inscription of Old Havana and its Fortifications on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
