Social policies for social inclusion and youth debated at the Forum of Ministers of Social Development for Latin America
The Ministers of Social Development for Latin America gathered in San Salvador (El Salvador) from 11 to 12 July 2011 for the 8th edition of the Forum of Ministers of Social Development for Latin America. Convened within the framework of the UNESCO Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Programme, this edition focused on the development of common social policies related to social inclusion, and in particular youth, in the region.
Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena, President of the Republic of El Salvador, Jeannette Sánchez, Minister of Social Development of Ecuador, and Humberto Centeno Najarro, Minister of the Interior of El Salvador, and Pilar Álvarez-Laso, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, participated in the opening ceremony
Representatives of other agencies of the United Nations, such as UNICEF, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), were also present, as well as representatives from SEGIB and OIJ and the Secretary-Generals of the main social science networks of Latin America: FLACSO, Francisco Rojas, and CLACSO, Emir Sader.
In parallel to the Forum, the results of the UNESCO MOST Project Repensar América Latina (Rethinking Latin America) were presented. And the UNESCO/Juan Bosch Prize for the Promotion of Social Science Research in Latin America and the Caribbean was launched by the Government of the Dominican Republic, to be awarded to the best master and doctorate thesis in social sciences of the region.
At the end of the Forum, the Ministers adopted a declaration to enhance regional cooperation, agree on a common agenda for joint work between the main social science networks and the Ministries of Social Development, and create more space for replication of best practices implemented in different countries.
