Suriname hosts the 19th Forum of Ministers of Culture and the First Meeting of Ministers of Culture of CELAC

The 19th Forum of Ministers of Culture and Officers in Charge of Cultural Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held from 14-15 March in Paramaribo, Capital of Suriname, jointly with the First Meeting of Ministers of Culture of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The joint meeting of Ministers of Culture, chaired by Hon. Dr. Shirley Sitaldin, Minister of Education and Community Development of Suriname and President of the Pro-Tempore Secretariat of the Forum of Ministers of Culture, will analyze the contribution of culture to sustainable development, using among other resources, the implementation of UNESCO Conventions in Latin America and the Caribbean. The gathering will devote spaces to the strengthening of regional cooperation and integration and to disseminate good practices in public policies aimed at favoring intercultural dialogue, culture of peace and non violence, social development and eradication of poverty.

There will be also presentations of mechanisms for cultural cooperation by the representatives of the Caribbean Community, the Andean Community of Nations, Common Market of the South, the Central American Integration System, Union of South American Nations and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Trade Treaty of the Peoples.

Information will be exchanged on legislations, incentives and financing for the cultural sector and artistic projects in different countries. Follow-up will be given to projects of the Forum as the 11th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA XI) which will also be hosted by Suriname in 2013, and the Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.

UNESCO maintains a close collaboration with this mechanism of cultural coordination since its first meeting, and as from 1999 the Organization facilitates, coordinates and finances from its Headquarters in Havana the Technical Secretary of the Forum.
