UNESCO welcomes statement by UN envoy for Iraq on safety of journalists at demonstrations

In a statement released in Baghdad on 30 August 2015, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Ján Kubiš welcomed the “peaceful and dignified” character of the ongoing demonstrations in Iraq, but calls for prosecution of those who try to derail the peaceful demonstrations and prevent journalists from doing their work.

Mr. Kubiš acknowledged the professional work of Iraqi Security Forces that are responsible for maintaining the peaceful character of the demonstrations, and for the safety of journalists and demonstrators, aimed at preventing violence and provocations by forces that might wish to spark clashes and spread chaos.

“This is particularly important since there are reports about ‘unknown entities’ intimidating, harassing, assaulting or threatening with death demonstrators as well as journalists’ says the statement.

“Such reports are disturbing and attempts in this direction must be rejected by demonstrators and all political forces. They must be firmly confronted by the Iraqi Security Forces in full compliance with the relating laws. The authorities must prosecute all persons who try to derail the peaceful demonstrations and prevent journalists from doing their work”, said Jan Kubiš.
