Three women-led projects in biosphere reserves receive “Terres de Femmes” International prize

Three women whose work is located in a UNESCO biosphere reserve were honored on 5 April 2018 at the Yves Rocher Foundation's "Terre de femmes" International Awards, which has rewarded women for their action and their commitment to the environment each year since 2001.

Gladys Reyes Macedo of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve in Mexico was awarded for the protection of Green Macaws in association with local communities to create jobs. (NGO Vinculación Interdisciplinaria para el Desarrollo Ambiental y lo Social A.C. Mexico).

Estrela Matilde of the Principe Island Biosphere Reserve in Sao Tome and Principe, was distinguished for the participatory waste management models whose objective is to promote women's entrepreneurship on the island, notably through jewelery making through the recycling of glass, to offer original and ecological products to tourists (Principe Trust Foundation, Principe).

Hanitra Markolf Rakotonirana was honored for her project Environmental Education and Development for Children in the Belo-sur-Mer - Kirindy Mitea Biosphere Reserve in Madagascar (NGO Chances for Nature, Germany). The latter received the Special Jury Prize presented to her by Mrs. Noëline Raondry Rakotoarisoa, Head of the Biosphere Reserves and Capacity Building Section of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences of UNESCO, who is also a member of the French jury of the Prix Terre de Femmes.

This year, 11 women from 11 different countries received this award for their commitment to improving the environment, bringing common values ​​to biosphere reserves around the world: fostering solutions that reconcile biodiversity conservation and its use sustainable.
