UNESCO and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia mark the establishment of the UNESCO Institute for Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology
The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and H.E. Gabriel Atanasov, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. from the Permanent Delegation of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to UNESCO on behalf of his Government, marked today the establishment of the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology at IZIIS, University "Ss. Cyril and Methodius" as a category 2 institute under the auspices of UNESCO by an exchange of letters. The ceremony was held in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mihail Garevski, Director of IZIIS.
The Centre will focus its action on disaster preparedness and mitigation.
“UNESCO and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are joining forces today to build capacities of Member States to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and build more resilient societies in the spirit of the International Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction”, declared the Director-General.
Mr. Atanasov thanked the Director-General for UNESCO’s support and commitment that will strengthen worldwide recognition of the Institute and enhance its potential to cooperate in a regional context.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. Garevski recalled the past history of the Institute, one of the oldest and most prestigious in its kind, with a strong emphasis on training experts from developing countries. He further explained the long-lasting close cooperation with UNESCO dating back to the creation of the Institute in 1965, and committed to pursue efforts focusing on protecting human lives and reducing physical and economic damage to the socio-economic systems resulting from earthquakes and other natural disasters. Bringing the Institute under the auspices of UNESCO will strengthen IZIIS’s role as an international and regional platform for policy advice, research and training on disaster preparedness and mitigation resources, technology transfer and the promotion of international and regional cooperation.
