UNESCO Director-General condemns the tragic shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, expressed her sorrow and strong condemnation at the shooting that took place on Saturday 24 May in the Jewish Museum in Brussels.

"I strongly condemn the despicable attack that killed at least three people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels," said the Director-General of UNESCO in response to the attack that took place this afternoon which seems to indicate that it is an anti-Semitic act. "I would like to convey my sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims. This attack against the people is an attack against a symbolic institution devoted to the culture and education of the history of Judaism in Belgium and Europe. UNESCO strongly reaffirms full respect for places dedicated to sharing, tolerance and the fight against anti-Semitism".

UNESCO is committed to the fight against all forms of racism and discrimination through education and dialogue between cultures. UNESCO is the only UN agency leading ‎a programme that aims at integrating the teaching of the history of the Holocaust in school curricula and it works with all Member States to promote Holocaust teaching as a tool in the fight against anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial today.
