UNESCO explores opportunities to develop literacy education for girls and women in Sudan

On 31 October – 1 November UNESCO met with the Minister of Education and other relevant stakeholders in Sudan to explore prospects for new initiatives that could strengthen literacy skills and learning opportunities of Sudanese girls and women in a lifelong learning perspective.

UNESCO’s representatives for the Section of Youth, Literacy and Skills Development and the Khartoum field office met with the Minister of Education, Ms Souad Abdelrazig, to discuss the possibilities of revising the current education policy towards a more integrated national education policy that included other ministries, such as Social Welfare and Women Development, Health and the Ministry of International Cooperation.

During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the need for integrating foundation skills with other skills, particularly in the sector of agriculture, and incorporating literacy in a lifelong learning perspective in education programmes.

Integrating girls and women in high-tech industries and supporting work on policy gaps in girls and women education were emphasized as some of the main areas of focus. Urban and rural Learning Centers for girls and women, with emphasis on general life skills and STEM education in a lifelong learning perspective, were also agreed upon as initiatives to be further explored by UNESCO and the Malala Fund.  

During the mission a visit was also organized to out-of-school classrooms and other numerous meetings were held with partners such as the Girls Education Unit of MoE; the Education Department of UNICEF; the UNESCO Chair for Women in Science and Technology; and the Ahfad University for Women and the Women Union.

The analysis of the current status of girls and women education in Sudan was done in collaboration with the Malala Fund for Girls’ Right to Education, which supports the implementation of projects linked to literacy and secondary education under UNESCO’s Global Partnership for girls’ and women’s Education “Better Life, Better Future”.
