On 16 January 2014, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Forest Whitaker received the Joel Siegel Award by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) “in recognition for his humanitarian efforts and creative excellence”. This Award was bestowed for exemplifying Joel Siegel’s belief that the true value of celebrity must be a platform to do good for others.
UNESCO is proud to support Forest Whitaker’s tireless efforts in his peace-building mission and his numerous projects and activities that he continues to implement in his capacity as a UNESCO Goodwill ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation.
Over the past decade, Forest Whitaker has been strongly committed to help communities impacted by destructive conflicts and gang violence to transform into safer and more prosperous places. He strongly believes that education and communication are indispensable domains to attain a culture of peace and non-violence.
Through his initiatives on the ground such as the Youth Peacemaker Network in South Sudan, Uganda and Mexico, Forest Whitaker already made a significant contribution in working with vulnerable youth who experience the aftermath of violence, war and trauma in providing them with the necessary skills and tools to escape poverty and to peacefully address conflicts in their communities. Forest Whitaker is convinced that peace and prosperity cannot be attained by communities and nations without heeding the voices of our diverse and vibrant youth.
“Throughout my journey, I have been truly moved by what so many of the young people that I’ve encountered have been willing to sacrifice for their communities. Almost all have had their lives scarred by violence. And yet, even though the world has taken so much from them, they still give so freely of their time, their energy, and sometimes their lives, to build communities where their friends and their families can live in peace. They are heroes in every sense of the word” stated Forest Whitaker during the award ceremony.
The Joel Siegel Award is a special honor given by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) in the name of "Good Morning America" film critic and founding BFCA member Joel Siegel. The Joel Siegel Award honors its namesake's legacy and his belief that the true value of celebrity is as an enhanced platform to support and create better living conditions for others. It also spotlights the leadership role so many great outstanding personalities undertake to help solve the world's most pressing problems.
