UNESCO puts the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the heart of the Consultation for the next Programme and Budget
UNESCO has launched the consultations for the next programme and budget with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as the priority. UNESCO will make full use of its multidisciplinary approach and several important steps already been made.
On 18 April 2016, a questionnaire has been sent to UNESCO Member States, Associate Members and all partners. 120 of them have replied to the questionnaire. This is the highest response rate to date for this exercise. In parallel, the cycle of regional thematic consultations has also been launched on 30 May and ended on 24 June.
After the general orientations adopted at the 30th General Conference, the new format for Strategic Results Report (document 199 EX/4 Part 1, B) will help evaluate the achievement of strategic results and propositions.
An Internet-based platform of consultation has been put in place by UNESCO Secretariat. More than 100 representatives of Member States have made inscriptions to the platform.
During the Third Interregional Meeting of National Commission for UNESCO, held in Shanghai between 13 June and 15 June, National Commissions of Member States were consulted for the preparation of UNESCO Draft Programme and Budget for 2018-2021 (39 C/5).
UNESCO envisions to create a Task Force to align programmatic documents, strengthen inter-sectoral coordination, deepen the sharing of information and reply to needs of Member States.
The SDG 4--Education 2030 Steering Committee of Sustainable Development Goals has been created in order to conduct the work with all partners in a more coordinated manner. The first meeting of the Steering Committee has been organized on 25 and 26 May, at UNESCO Headquarters.
UNESCO has launched a sectoral review about progress made by less-developed countries in the framework of Istanbul Programme of Action. This analysis contributed to the assessment, made in Antalya from 27 May to 29 May, about the implementation of the programme of the United Nations.
UNESCO actively supports Member States through the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development by contributing to reports which help animate debates among Member States and organizing parallel meetings. The implementation of the 2030 Agenda requires strengthened coherence across the whole system. UNESCO fully participates in the dialogue of the ECOSOC on the long-term positioning of the UN system in the context of Agenda 2030.
