UNESCO Signs Agreement with China’s Hisense Co. Ltd to Renew Equipment
China’s largest electronics manufacturer, Hisense Co. Ltd, donated equipment to UNESCO in a signing ceremony on 2 May 2014 attended by Mr Li Qun, Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee of Qingdao City, where the company is headquartered, Mr Liu Hao, Executive Vice President of Hisense Co, Mr Hao Ping, President of the General Conference and Vice-Minister of Education of China, and Mr You Shaozhong, Ambassador and Chinese Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.
Hisense Co. Ltd also made a financial contribution of €80,000 for the restoration of UNESCO’s electronic facilities at Headquarters.
Mr Li Qun informed Director-General Irina Bokova that Qingdao, a coastal city in Shandong Province, boasts a fast-growing economy and a commitment to protecting tangible and intangible cultural heritage. He expressed interest in further cooperation with UNESCO, including in the areas of heritage and skills training in communication and information technology.
Mrs Bokova reiterated UNESCO’s pride in receiving President Xi Jinping on 27 March 2014, and referred to the strength and importance of UNESCO’s cooperation with China. Expressing gratitude for the generous donation, Mrs Bokova awarded the Confucius Medal to Mr Li Qun. She affirmed that Qingdao’s vibrant economy and attachment to culture and heritage “embodies China’s ambition to balance modernity with heritage and history and to develop its human capital.”
