On Thursday 20 April last, in Reyykjavik, Ms Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, former President of the Republic of Iceland and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, inaugurated the International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding, Category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO.

Hosted by the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages at the University of Iceland, in Reykjavik, the Center takes place in the new Language and Culture building.

This Center is part of the agreement signed on 27 June 2013 between UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, and Government of Iceland in presence of Ms Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. This agreement aims at strengthening the Organization’s actions in the field of the preservation of languages and linguistic diversity around the world, through the support of a Category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO established in Reykjavik.

Irina Bokova had already expressed her support to Ms Finnbogadóttir for her invaluable contribution as well as all the academics that have contributed to the language Centre. “The Centre is inspired by a single idea – that language is a core part of the identity and cultural heritage of humanity,” adding that “multilingualism is essential for intercultural understanding and it is vital for dialogue based on respect”.

“The Centre will be an information centre for languages and culture with excellent facilities for research, language learning and dissemination. In cooperation with other institutes, international scholars and those interested in languages, such a centre would be a significant contribution towards preserving and strengthening linguistic diversity. The World Language Centre regards it an honour to develop and continue the pioneering work that Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, former president of Iceland, has carried out as the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Languages” according to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir has been UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 1998 with the mission of promoting linguistic diversity, women’s rights and education.
