Vik Muniz, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, marked World Philosophy Day through art exhibition

Atalanta & Hippomenes, Vik Muniz

Entitled “Reflections on Life and Art: Air, Ashes and Trash”, the exhibition of Vik Muniz’ art works took place on 16 November last at UNESCO Headquarters in the framework of the celebrations of the World Philosophy Day.

This artistic event organized by the Permanent Delegation of Brazil to UNESCO and the gallerie Xippas Paris, featured Vik Muniz’ works from many series including “Sugar Children”, “Pictures of Garbage” and “Pictures of Air”.

Photographer and mixed-media artist Vik Muniz reinterprets pictures of Art History or the media with non-traditional materials such as sugar, dust, ashes or even garbages.

With his diptych Atalanta and Hippomenes, after the baroque painter Guido Reni, Vik Muniz places these two characters of Greek mythology in the middle of waste.

In addition to questioning the environmental impact of waste in our societies, Vik Muniz questions the philosophical nature of art. With his works on Sugar children, he criticizes child labor.

Faithful to his mission as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Vik Muniz demonstrates once again here that art is a powerful tool for reflection on the development of our societies.
