Virtuoso Iraqi oud artist, Naseer Shamma, joins UNESCO Artists for peace family.
On 23 February 2017, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova designated the renowned Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, during an official ceremony held at the Organization Headquarters in the presence of numerous personalities and artists.
Mr Shamma has received this title “in recognition of his commitment to support the musical education for young people in Iraq and beyond, his unfailing efforts to promote the message of peace through his performances”.
Known as an oud virtuoso and a songwriter of numerous music for film, theater and television, Mr Shamma joins the family of UNESCO Artists for Peace alongside Lebanon’s oud master Marcel Khalife.
During his career, he has participated in several international concerts and festivals of music and poetry which have contributed to the revival of interest in the oud accompanying poetry. He then played a decisive role in bringing East and West closer together with legendary European and American musicians such as the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
As a UNESCO Artist for Peace, Mr. Shamma will participate in specific events to promote the events organized by the UNESCO office in Baghdad. Mr. Shamma expressed his wish to continue to organize specific musical performances for the International Day of Peace celebrated on 21 September.
On the occasion of his public speeches and appearances, M Shamma also commits himself to use his influence and prestige to help promote UNESCO’s messages and programmes.
