Zarifa Mgoyan (Zara) is designated UNESCO Artist for Peace

In her new capacity as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, Zarifa Mgoyan will support UNESCO’s work aiming to promote the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities, through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.

Through your music, you unite people beyond their origins. You have brought the same commitment to your life through your engagements to strengthen the resilience of society, to deepen respect for the human rights and dignity of all women and men, especially children, especially persons with disabilities”, said the Director-General in the speech delivered on the occasion of this event. She expressed her gratitude to Zarifa Mgoyan for her intention to support, in her new capacity as an Artist for Peace, UNESCO’s work to support persons with disabilities.

In her acceptance speech, Zarifa Mgoyan expressed her satisfaction with joining UNESCO’s prestigious family of Goodwill Ambassadors and Artists for Peace. She also announced her intention to organize an International Festival of Ethnic Music in the Russian Federation in 2017 to support disability issues.

“Zarifa Mgoyan is deeply engaged in a wide range of charitable activities in Russia – as a leader of the Step Towards Charity Foundation, supporting children and adults with disabilities as well as through her involvement with the By Call of Heart Foundation, which aims to empower children with visual impairments”, said His Excellency Mr Alexander Kuznetsov, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, in the speech that he delivered on that occasion.

The designation ceremony was followed by a live performance by Zarifa Mgoyan and her musicians. The famous French singer Mireille Mathieu joined her voice to that of Zarifa Mgoyan to the audience’s delight.
