A Gambian delegation visits UNESCO’s literacy project in Senegal
A delegation from the Gambia will come to Senegal to visit UNESCO’s literacy project (PAJEF) from 17-21 March 2014.
The PAJEF is a literacy project for girls and women in Senegal and is coordinated by UNESCO Dakar. It has successfully combined literacy and numeracy with entrepreneurial skills, and used TV and mobile phones to reach out to women.
The project has also provided specific tutoring support to girls at risk of dropping out of school.These classes are concentrating on strengthening girls’ literacy skills through vocational training.
The delegation is composed of eight people from the Gambian Ministry of Education and headed by the Director Basic and Secondary Education.
The Gambian delegates will familiarize themselves with the PAJEF project through visits to several literacy classes and discussions with responsible stakeholders. The delegation will also visit a so-called virtual class where students are using learning applications with mobile phones and computers. This is a part of the ICT techniques used in learning and teaching literacy, which has been successfully embedded in the learning processes in Senegal.
“The focus of the visit is to present successful teaching methods for literacy, by the use of ICT’s and the effectiveness of the empowerment of the beneficiary women,” says Saip Sy, PAJEF project coordinator in UNESCO Dakar. “The goal is to strengthen south-south cooperation but also looking good practices to scalp up literacy programmes,” he adds.
Reach out through TV
The Gambian Delegation will also visit DRTS (Direction radio television scolaire), an educational TV and radio stationowned by the Senegalese state. DRTS is producing television programmes teaching literacy and numeracy skills to women. The programmes are broadcasted on RTS 1 (national TV station) during the women program “Diek ak keureum” .
Finally, they will visit the Niague village outside Dakar, where the PAJEF literacy project is taking place. Girls and women of the village have successfully used their newly assimilated skills in literacy to improve their business of selling vegetables.
Also other field visit will be carried to tutoring classes for support girls in formal school to prevent the drop out of primary school and literacy class for girls with the focus on vocational training.
The delegation will be accompanied by UNESCO staff and literacy project team (PAJEF) during their visit.
