Forum of the Arab National Commissions for UNESCO held in Morocco
UNESCO and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) jointly organized the Forum of the Arab National Commissions from 12 to 13 June 2013 at the ISESCO Headquarters, in Rabat, Morocco. The main objective of this Forum was to share knowledge and information on the Organizations’ priorities as well as to develop best practices with a view to enhancing the capacities and functioning of these National Commissions.
13 National Commissions attended this 2-day meeting, which also served as a platform for developing further cooperation among and with National Commissions of the region. Mr Eric Falt, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information of UNESCO, jointly opened this seminar with Mr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of ISESCO. The Director Generals of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS), as well as Mr Abdelhafid Debbarh, representative of the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive Training of Morocco and President of the Moroccan National Commission for Education, Culture and Sciences also participated in this important meeting.
One of the main topics discussed were the implementation by the National Commissions of the Medium Term Strategy and Programmes of UNESCO, the better understanding of their role in implementing programmes and activities at the national level as well as the mechanisms of the cooperation between National Commissions and the Organization, and to facilitate preparations by the National Commissions from the Region to the forthcoming 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO (Paris, 5-20 November 2013).
