Amman celebrates World Press Freedom Day

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO's Amman Office is supporting the Centre for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) in its efforts to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of information and press freedom in Jordan.

On 3 May, the World Press Freedom Day, CDFJ launched a public awareness campaign in Amman by displaying large posters and banners, promoting freedom of expression and freedom of the press. The posters will be exhibited for ten days in ten public locations provided for this purpose, free of charge, by the Amman Municipality.

The Day will also be marked by a cultural event, which is being organized by CDFJ with the support of UNESCO's Office in Amman on 8 May. Although the ceremony will be mainly attended by local journalists, the media, the international community, NGOs and youth organizations, it is open to the public as well.

The event will feature different artistic performances, in addition to speeches from organizers and the patronage on the importance of right to information and freedom of expression. The highlight of the evening will be a rap concert, in which local artists will perform their own songs about freedom of expression, especially produced for the occasion. Other performances will include a theatre play, the screening of four short films about freedom of expression, created by Jordanian youth, and an exhibition of cartoons from local newspaper caricaturists.
