The application of UNESCO’S Media Development Indicators (MDIs) will officially start in Bolivia on 15 August 2011, after the methodology is presented to the Consultative Group that has been set up for this purpose. The Group is made up of representatives of the Bolivian communication sector, including private, public and community media, universities, government officials, associations of journalists, freedom of expression NGOs and other concerned groups.

The launching event that will take place in La Paz has been organized in collaboration with Bolivian UNIR Foundation and its National Media Observatory (ONADEM), with the support of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). After Ecuador, Bolivia will be the second country in the region to implement this methodology.

The Consultative Group will meet on 15 August to jointly study the methodology for the application of the Indicators in Bolivia. The aim of the workshop is to collect suggestions and recommendations to ensure that the MDIs are applied with rigour, faithfully reflecting the state of development of the five areas considered by the instrument: regulatory system, plurality and diversity of media, democratic discourse, capacity-building and infrastructure.

This work will culminate in the Assessment of Media Development in Bolivia, a tool aiming at providing a solid reference for the preparation and implementation of media development projects and policies to national and international stakeholders.
