Austria: Spot on Cultural Diversity
Media Campaign on the occasion of the celebration of UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
17-22 May 2013 - Austrian-wide coverage by the daily newspaper “Der Standard”, the public service radio station “Ö1” (Austrian Radio 1), and their respective online news platforms derStandard.at and oe1.orf.at
At the initiative of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO a media campaign was launched on the occasion of the celebration of UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development in order to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting and promoting the diversity of cultural expressions. The campaign involved two high-quality media networks: the daily newspaper “Der Standard” (with on average over 400.000 readers for the weekend print-issue) and the radio station “Ö1” (Austrian Radio 1), the main culture and news channel of ORF, the Austrian public service brodcaster. The newspaper “Der Standard” dedicated its weekend issue (18.-20.05.2013) to the theme of cultural diversity, exploring throughout the issue cultural diversity from a range of different angles, e.g. international and national politics, economy, culture, education, sports, etc. Likewise the radio channel Ö1 broadcasted a series of features on different aspects of cultural diversity/the diversity of cultural expressions in its programmes “Kultur aktuell” and “Kulturjournal”, e.g. the UNESCO-Convention on the diversity of cultural expressions and international trade negotiations (“Kultur aktuell”, 17.05.2013) or cultural rights and development (“Kulturjournal”, 21.05.2013).
