Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education Takes Off

The development of quality distance education programmes is one of the main objectives of the Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education (CUPIDE), which now takes off with the establishment of its implementation plan. CUPIDE is a joint project of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica's Capital Kingston and UNESCO.

Other institutions participating in CUPIDE that is funded through a Japanese Funds-in-trust and managed by UWI, are the University of Technology of Jamaica, the University of Guyana, the University of Surinam, and the University Quisqueya in Haiti.

In recognition of the need to increase access to the services offered by universities in the Caribbean region, CUPIDE is intended to enhance and develop the human resources and technical capacity at each of the universities to enable ICT use for human resource development in the region through the development of quality distance education programmes.

The project management says that it is hoped that the project contributes to enhance the competitiveness of the region in general and the institutions in particular, to increase the participation in the knowledge society - not only as users, but also as generators of knowledge - and to realize cost savings n the use of the technology for distribution of the course materials and the teaching and administration of programmes.
