Celebration of the International Museum Day in Kuwait

Established in 1977, and celebrated every year on and around 18 May, the International Museum Day aims to increase public awareness of the crucial role museums play in the development of society. Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2017, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 36,000 museums hosting events in some 156 countries. Each year a theme is presented, inviting participating museums to organize lectures, workshops and other activities on this theme. For this year, museums are invited to think around “Hyperconnected museums: new approaches, new publics”.

To celebrate International Museum Day, and as part of the ongoing project “Preservation and Promotion of Kuwait’s Cultural Heritage”, UNESCO Regional Office for the GCC countries and Yemen, in partnership with the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature (NCCAL), Supreme Council for Planning and Delivery (SCPD) and UNDP, will organize an exhibition titled: “Transportation: a Vehicle of Culture” at the National Museum of Kuwait. The exhibition will be open from 12-26 May and various museums will take part in the event. The main aims of the exhibition is to popularize museums in Kuwait, to mark the International Museum Day as well as to encourage visitors to engage with museums, both public and private.
