Centenary of Amadou Mahtar M’Bow

A Man Standing Tall In His Century

Monday 25 October 2021 - from 9:45 am to 1:00 pm - Room I at UNESCO Headquarters

The Association of Former UNESCO Officials (AFUS), in cooperation and with the financial support of UNESCO, is organizing the Centenary of ‘Amadou Mahtar M’Bow: A Man Standing Tall in his Century’, on Monday, 25 October, 2021. This celebration will be an opportunity not only to pay tribute to the action of the Director-General during his two terms of office, from 1974 to 1987, but to pay tribute to the Founders of UNESCO, the achievements of the successive Directors-Generals and also to recall the topicality of the missions of our Organization.

This half-day celebration will take place in the morning from 9:45 am to 1:00 pm, in Paris, at UNESCO House in Room I. It will bring together, in addition to the current Director-General Ms. Audrey Azoulay, the successors of Mr. M’Bow, Mr. Federico Mayor, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura and Ms. Irina Bokova, the President of the General Conference, Mr. Altay Cengizer, and the Chairperson of the Executive Board, Mr. Agapito Mba Mokuy, as well as various personalities from political, intellectual and cultural circles.

This event is aimed at former UNESCO officials and serving officials, members of Permanent Delegations, representatives of IGOs and NGOs, young people, the media and the general public interested in UNESCO.

The ceremony is organized both in person and remotely with simultaneous interpretation in English and French. If you wish to follow remotely the ceremony, please click on the following link https://webcast.unesco.org/events/2021-10-MBOW100. You will also have the opportunity to watch it because it will be broadcasted on the AFUS Website (www.afus-unesco.org).

The AFUS intends, thereafter, to publish the speeches made and messages shared during the celebration as well as a selection of testimonials communicated subsequently. If you wish to write a text (in French or English, approximately 600 words), you may send your contribution by email in WORD at the following address: afus.lien@afus.unesco.org.
