Consultation of the Director-General with Member States and National Commissions of the Europe and North America region on the preparation of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 (37 C/4) and the Programme and Budget for 2014-2017 (37 C/5)

Director-General’s Consultation with Member States and National Commissions for UNESCO of the Europe and North America Region on the Preparation of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 (37 C/4) and the Programme and Budget for 2014-2017 (37 C/5), the third of the series, opened on Monday morning, 10 September 2012 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Earlier in June, the first consultation started in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for the Africa Region and the second one took place in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam for the Asia and Pacific Region.

Mrs Katalin Bogyay, President of the General Conference of UNESCO, Mr Peter Burian, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic and Mr Hans d’Orville, Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning, Representative of the Director-General of UNESCO, made welcoming addresses at the opening of this event.

Some 70 participants from 41 countries of the Europe and North America Region attended this three-day regional gathering. Aside from the representatives of the National Commissions, also present were several Permanent Delegates to UNESCO.

During the first day of discussions the participants have praised the Director-General’s Preliminary Proposals on 37 C/4 and 37 C/5, which they perceive as an important attempt to reform the Organization. Participants also congratulated the Director-General for "bringing the Organization closer to the UN system."
