In a ceremony at the the National Institute of Water Resources (Instituto Nacional de Recursos Hidráulicos-INRH), the United Nations System (UNS) in Cuba and the INRH celebrated World Water Day.

The Officer in charge of the UNESCO Office in Havana, Fernando Brugman, spoke on behalf of UNS, read the messages from the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, and the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, on the occasion of the celebration.

Brugman emphasized the need to efficiently use the resource and referred to projects underway in Cuba and the Dominican Republic by the United Nations System in order to prevent and mitigate disasters such as floods and depression of aquifers, largely caused by climate change and highly destructive atmospheric events.

With the presentation "International Decade for Action: Water for Life 2005-2015", the chief specialist of the Department of Technology Management and Innovation at the INRH, Alien Pérez Santos, highlighted some relevant aspects of the water resource status worldwide and the reasons behind the launching of the Decade by the United Nations, together with some of the fundamental trends of access to water and sanitation post 2015.

The specialist also referred to the XVII National Artistic, Story and Poetry Contest for Children "Trazaguas 2015". The initiative is yearly dedicated to the WWD. The awarding ceremony will take place on March 22.

At the end, a group of students from the "Miguel Fernandez Roig" primary school presented a dramatized poem, written by one of the girls, on the need to protect the environment and save water.

The event was attended by the Vice President of INAH, Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez; the Director of International Relations of the institution, Vladimir Cabranes Alpizar; the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Yuri Viamontes; the President of the Union of Architects and Engineers of Cuba, Mercedes Elesther Savigne; the President of the Society of Hydraulic Engineers of Cuba, Rafael Feitó; and Dr. Christopher Diaz Morejón, representing the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

The National Programme Officer of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Odalys Rodríguez, along with Cuban officials institutions, specialists and INRH workers were present as well.

The World Water Day is celebrated every March 22 since 1994, after the adoption of resolution A / RES / 47/193, by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1993.

This 2015, the theme of the conference is "Water and Sustainable Development". The celebration takes place at a time when the United Nations prepare to approve a new agenda for sustainable development beyond 2015. It is, therefore, an important opportunity to highlight the role that water plays in the development road map that the United Nations are currently defining, as emphasized by the UN Secretary General and the Director General of UNESCO in their respective messages.
