Director-General and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance of the United Arab Emirates inaugurate Room I

30 October - His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, and the UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, inaugurated the renovated and improved Room I, on the day of the opening of the UNESCO General Conference. The renovation took place with the generous support of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.

“I see this as a powerful symbol, among so many marks of support, of the depth of our partnership” declared UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova in her statement. “The nameplates displayed here in honour of His Highness will serve to remind future generations of His Highness’ commitment to advancing UNESCO’s ‘soft power,’ through education, culture, the sciences, and, in the name of the entire UNESCO family and in my own name, I wish to say how deeply grateful I am, “ she continued, wishing all Member States successful and productive discussions during the 39th session of the General Conference.

“The opening of this majestic room will remind all with memories of decision-makers and prominent representatives of many States, with echoes of their discussions and numerous constructive and accountable debates that contributed to spreading the enlightenment of education, knowledge and the ethos of human values – all this still resonates between the walls of this magnificent hall. These values help us tackle the challenges, to sustain the welfare and coexistence of humanity, where the values of peace, stability, and mutual respect prevail,” said H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum donated an amount of USD 6.2 million for the renovation and improvement of Room I. This generous contribution is embedded in the spirit of the longstanding partnership between UNESCO and the UAE; it is also a feature of the collaboration set up within the “UNESCO-Hamdan Bin Rashid al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers,” established in 2008.

Ahead of the opening, the Director-General and H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid held a  bilateral meeting during which they discussed the fruitful cooperation established between UNESCO and the UAE in many areas, including sustainable development, dialogue among civilizations, violent extremism and education for citizenship. Following the meeting, the Director-General and H.E. Mr. Hussain Ibrahim Al-Hammadi, Minister of Education signed a new Strategic Partnership Framework Agreement “to support and promote quality education in a global context” for a total amount of USD 1 million.

The signing of the agreement took place in presence of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum as well as H.H. Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, H.E. Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health, H.E. Dr Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, Minister of State, H.E. Juma Al Majid, Chairman of the Dubai Economic Council, Dr Jamal M. Al Mehairi, Secretary General of Hamdan Award., H.E. Maadhad Hareb Alkhyeli, UAE Ambassador to France, Mr. Abdulla Alneaimi, Permanent Delegate of the United Arab Emirates to UNESCO, H.E. Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, Former Minister and H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Kendi, Former Speaker of UAE Federal National Council.
