Director-General puts UNESCO’s expertise at the disposal of Japan
Only hours after the most powerful natural disaster in Japanese history, the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region on 11 March 2011, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova addressed a letter of condolences to Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan and to the Japanese people.
The Director-General expressed her commitment to put the Organization’s expertise, more specifically that of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), at the disposal of the Japanese authorities and people.
"UNESCO as a whole stands ready to monitor the situation closely and to provide assistance in areas that may help", Irina Bokova emphasized.
