Director-General to open World Heritage Committee in Istanbul

On 10 July, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, will participate in the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 10 to 20 July. The opening ceremony will take place in the presence of Binali Yildirim, Prime Minister of Turkey, Mevlüt Cavusoglu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Nabi Avci, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkey and Lale Ülker, Ambassador and Chairperson of the World Heritage Committee.

The 40th Session of the World Heritage Committee will examine proposals to inscribe 29 sites on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, including 9 natural sites, 16 cultural sites and 4 mixed sites. It will also examine the state of conservation of 108 sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List and of 48 sites inscribed on the World Heritage in Danger List. The debates of the session will be webcast live on http://whc.unesco.org/.

During her mission in Istanbul, the Director-General will participate in the ceremony to designate Kudsi Ergüner as UNESCO Artist for Peace. Kudsi Ergüner will be designated in recognition of his extraordinary contributions as an outstanding Turkish musician to the preservation of the classical music of the 16th century Ottoman Empire.
