Held under the auspices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ministry of Education in close coordination with the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS) and UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), UNESCO Doha conducted a three-day Seminar on “Education 2030 in the GCC and Yemen: Focus on Population related Indicators for Educational Planning,” on 8-10 September 2015 at the headquarters of ABEGS in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Within the mandate of UNESCO Doha’s education program, the overall purpose of the seminar was to work towards a framework for education indicators for the GCC States to assess progress in the implementation of the post-2015 education agenda.

More than 30 participants composed of education experts, statisticians, and population experts from 6 GCC states from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and UAE, participated actively in the meeting to review the Framework for Action Education 2030 and the proposed thematic indicators for education to initiate preparations for implementation in the GCC and Yemen.

The seminar provided a platform to the key education stakeholders, population experts and decision makers in the GCC States for open dialogue with both UNESCO and the United Nations Population Division (UNPD) to ensure the production of sound population estimates, while considering and evaluating national data.

The seminar likewise proposed a road map on how the countries will improve their coordination with the UNPD for the production of population estimations and projections and with the UNESCO Institute of Statistics for education data.
