Fourth Technical Cooperation Group Meeting on SDG4 Education 2030 Indicators held in Dubai

Under the auspices of His Excellency Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Cabinet Member and Minister of Education, UAE and building on the discussion from the third Technical Cooperation Group (TCG3) in Montreal, Canada and the fourth meeting of the Global Alliance to Monitor Learning (GAML4) in November 2017 in Madrid Spain, UNESCO UIS in collaboration with the Regional Center for Educational Planning (RCEP) and the Arab Bureau of Education in the Gulf States (ABEGS) organized the Fourth TCG meeting in Dubai, UAE on 17-18 January 2018.

Ms. Sylvia Montoya, Director of UNESCO UIS and Dr. Jordan Naidoo, UNESCO chaired the opening session of the meeting on 17 January 2018  with welcome remarks by the hosts : H.E. Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Cabinet Member and Minister of Education, UAE ; Ms. Mahra Hilal Almutaiwei, Director of RCEP and Dr. Ali bin Abdul Khaliq Al-Karni, Director General of ABEGS.

Within the framework of SDG Education 2030 and on behalf of UNESCO Office for the Gulf States  and Yemen (Education), Dr. Faryal Khan, Programme Specialist for Education, participated in the TCG4.  The TCG4  meeting aimed to provide an opportunity for participants to be briefed with the key developments that have occured since TCG3 and GAML4 meeting towards SDG4 agenda. The participants participated in the process of:

·Reviewing and ratifying the TCG work plans for 2018

·Approving  the report on benchmarking recommendation for indicators

·Discussing and updating a list of indictors to be reported  in 2018 and overall indicators’ periodicity recommendations

·Advancing the discussion on potential new indicators for the 2018 revision with the approval of the preliminary list.

·Endorsing the progress report to the education 2030 steering committee on indicators methodological development

·Identifying  and approving TCG rotation mechanism and broader governance

The meeting brought together key stakeholders in education and education statistics to continue the activities of the TCG. The TCG is composed of 28 Member States, including Members of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG indicators, representatives from civil society organizations and from international organizations including among others, OECD, UNICEF, the WorldBank and UNESCO itself.
