Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Met in Alexandria

The Sixth Meeting of the International "Friends" of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina took place, from 10 to 13 October in Alexandria, Egypt. This was the first formal meeting of the various "Friends" Associations since the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was officially inaugurated on 16 October 2002.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina "Friends" Associations, which help promote and contribute to the success of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, have now grown to over twenty-five world-wide. UNESCO was largely responsible for launching the International "Friends"; and over the years they have played a key role in the development of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, its collections and programmes.

This "Friends" Meeting afforded an opportunity to exchange views and ideas on past and possible future actions in support of the Library, its institutes, Museums, galleries, planetarium, exhibition spaces and conference centre. It was also an occasion for UNESO to renew its commitment, and outline its future plans, for supporting and collaborating with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This is especially important now that the Library is up and running, and given its vision and mission to serve as a foremost digital centre of learning and access to knowledge, as well as a space for free expression and cross-cultural understanding, thereby promoting democracy and peace in the region.
