GCC training on Biosphere Reserves and "Man and the Biosphere" Programme held in Doha

The UNESCO Regional Office in Doha and the Department of Nature Reserves, Ministry of Municipality and Environment, State of Qatar, in coordination with the Qatar National Commission to UNESCO, are organizing a Regional Training for GCC countries on Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme in Doha from 24 April to 27 April 2017.

The four-day training aims at building technical capacities of the Gulf Countries’ institutions and stakeholders and is specifically designed for National stakeholders involved in the management of Protected Areas in the Arab Gulf region.

Participants representing Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, KSA, UAE and Kuwait shall be trained in various aspects of Planning & Management of Protected Areas & Nature Reserves and the Best Practices adopted therein. Participants shall be familiarized with concepts and application requirements of potential sites to be nominated under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB).

The training includes a field visit of the Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve in Qatar, during which participants learn about Qatar’s rich experience and lessons learnt in the development of an integrated management plan (IMP) for a Man and Biosphere Reserve.

The main objectives of the training are to :

- enhance knowledge about UNESCO’s MAB Programme, including purpose, benefits, concepts, application and nomination;

- share experience of the Al-Reem MAB Reserve as a best practice, including lessons learnt of development of the Integrated Management Plan (IMP); and,

- screen and evaluate Protected Areas in the region of their potential for nomination under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Program.
